Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters
A recent study suggests that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such drugs need to be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
People who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," described one woman.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
